REUTERS/Beck Diefenbach/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsSept 19 (Reuters) - Meta (META.O) CEO Mark Zuckerberg's philanthropy venture plans to build a computing system powered by artificial intelligence for life sciences research to study human cells and diseases. The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, created by Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan, will use the computing system to run openly available AI models, the philanthropy venture said on Tuesday. AI has been used in the life sciences domain for some years. The system will be trained on datasets from software tool CZ Cell x Gene, as well as resources from Chan Zuckerberg Biohub Network and Chan Zuckerberg Institute for Advanced Biological Imaging, and publicly available data. The company released its latest Llama 2 model in July, and offered it for free to businesses of a certain size.

The organization will no longer be granting money toward educational policy, a big part of CZI's work since its founding, the emails said. As part of its "refreshed strategy," CZI said it is "transitioning" how it supports Summit Learning. The new strategy, laid out to CZI's roughly 500 employees, is to find new education products. Politics was one of its founding areas of work, alongside education and the eradication of all disease. "I give it two more years," one of the people familiar said of CZI's current education work.

The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative conducted layoffs this week, in a major blow to its education team. However, the cuts were entirely focused on employees in tech and grantmaking in CZI's education department, a core pillar of the organization's since its founding. As part of the changes, two leaders in CZI's education work are leaving their roles. While today's announcement most directly impacts our Education teammates, I know we are all affected regardless of where we sit in the organization. I am grateful for all of our Education teammates, past and present, whose contributions made our accomplishments to-date possible and carved our path forward.

The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative is a charitable vehicle for the wealthy couple. The charitable foundation of Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan conducted its first layoff this week. The cuts at the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative impacted 48 employees, according to two people familiar with the company. Over at Meta, employees there have dealt with layoffs since November, as the company looked to reduce costs in the face of slowing revenue growth and massive expenses on Zuckerberg's metaverse ambitions. It seems that mandate has made its way over to the CEO's charitable initiative as well.

Zuck showed up looking bejeweled at the Eras Tour in California. Mark Zuckerberg is a busy man, but he still has time to get his Swiftie on. "Life of a girl dad," Zuckerberg wrote on Instagram, showing off his concert glam — which included little gemstones bejeweling his face. On top of that, off-duty Zuck also sported an impressive stack of beaded bracelets for what one might guess are his favorite Swift eras. It's unclear how long Zuck has been a Swift fan, or how much of her music he listens to on the reg.

In early July, Mark Zuckerberg unveiled the latest and perhaps most consequential product in Meta's history: a new model of Mark Zuckerberg. Silicon Valley Zuck was a husband and father with a legacy to build and protect at all costs. Silicon Valley Zuck was suddenly faced with something he'd never dealt with before, shrinking revenue. Still clinging to his persona as Silicon Valley Zuck, Zuckerberg engaged in an all-out media blitz to hawk his vision for the metaverse. They were the sort of people Harvard Zuck would have scoffed at and Silicon Valley Zuck would have gently ignored.

Mark Zuckerberg shared a family photo with his daughters' faces hidden by emojis. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg provoked accusations of hypocrisy from users on his platforms by censoring his childrens' faces in a family photo. It is a common practice among parents to obscure the faces of their children in social media posts for privacy reasons. On Instagram, one user got 2,800 likes commenting under Zuckerberg's post: "Even Zuck doesn't trust his platforms to put his kids faces up." Much of the ire focused on accusing Zuckerberg of hypocrisy, since Meta has been embroiled in controversies relating to its users' data.

Instagram launched "Threads" — a new alternative to Twitter — on Thursday. But the platform's already drawing criticism from the right, including Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene. She argues that the new platform will be a "Marxist style social media experience." —Marjorie Taylor Greene 🇺🇸 (@mtgreenee) July 6, 2023The Georgia Republican added that the "Marxist style social media experience" would entail "social experimentation serving Big Pharma, the Intelligence Community, and DEI Initiatives to strengthen corporate stocks supporting garbage DEI issues and steal elections." In criticizing Threads right out of the gate, Greene is drawing on long-standing antipathies on the right towards both Meta and Zuckerberg.

Driven by the recent AI boom, companies are raiding top college campuses for rare technical talent. She's currently on leave from her Stanford AI Ph.D. program to focus on Moonhub. In 2011, new AI Ph.D. graduates took jobs in the tech industry and academia in about equal measure. But since then, the majority of new grads have headed to the AI industry, with nearly double the percentage of AI Ph.D. grads taking industry jobs versus academic roles in 2021, according to Stanford's Institute for Human-Centered AI's 2023 AI Index Report. "All AI companies have roles for people with Ph.D.s and without," said Attaluri, the soon-to-be researcher at DeepMind.

Take this survey and tell us how you want to take your money and career to the next level.
These cuts could happen as soon as this week before CEO Mark Zuckerberg goes on parental leave. Meta already laid off 11,000 workers or approximately 13% of the company's headcount in November. This fresh round of headcount cuts is happening because of Meta's financial targets, and is separate from Zuckerberg's push for "flattening" Meta's organizational structure, Bloomberg's sources — who were granted anonymity to talk about internal matters — said. A Meta spokesperson declined to comment on further layoffs, the expected number of job cuts, and which divisions might be impacted. The spokesperson did not immediately respond to Insider's follow-up query on when these reported job cuts might happen.
He has a net worth of $67.6 billion, according to Forbes, and spends much of it on charity. But he also pours money into real estate, especially in Hawaii, and cars. The Meta founder and CEO's fortune surpassed $100 billion last year, making him one of 10 centi-billionaires on the planet. Zuckerberg mostly keeps a low profile, but he does splurge on real estate — especially in the tropical paradise that is Hawaii. Here's how the tech mogul spends his billions, from cars to properties to charity.
Mark ZuckerbergMark Zuckerberg, with a net worth of $56.7 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, once told physicist Stephen Hawking he wanted to know what would enable humans to live forever. Drew Angerer/Getty ImagesInsider's Cadie Thompson reported that in 2015, the late physicist Stephen Hawking asked Mark Zuckerberg about which big questions in science he sought answers to. Zuckerberg responded, "I'm most interested in questions about people. How does learning work and how we can empower humans to learn a million times more?" Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan are among a small crop of Silicon Valley elite who founded the prize in 2012, and continue to back it.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg grew up outside of New York City and dropped out of Harvard after founding Facebook. He's built it into a $383 billion company while weathering numerous scandals and controversies. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has weathered success and controversy in equal parts over the past 18 years. But things have shifted in 2022 as user numbers stalled out for the first time and Zuckerberg's net worth plunged. Here's a look at the timeline of Zuckerberg's career, from his early life in a New York suburb to his role as one of the most powerful CEOs in the world.
Today, we're kicking things off with my colleague Eugene Kim's look at a (secret) new team at Amazon. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy is trying to fix the company's crumbling engineering culture. According to leaked documents, Amazon formed the "Amazon Software Builder Experience" group to "focus on improving the experience of software builders across Amazon." Some Amazon engineers have expressed that they're "overwhelmed" by mundane software upgrade work, manual testing and deployment, and hard-to-use developer tools. The Meta CEO announced on Instagram: "Happy to share that Max and August are getting a new baby sister next year!"
Mark Zuckerberg's leadership is putting Meta on track to fail, a Harvard management expert says — but it's not a lost cause. That's the suggestion for Zuckerberg from Bill George, a senior fellow at Harvard Business School and former CEO of medical technology company Medtronic. Instead, Zuckerberg has become a leader who prioritizes profits, doesn't accept advice and blames others, according to George. In February, CNBC's Jim Cramer said he has "total faith in Mark Zuckerberg" when it comes to Meta's bet on the metaverse. Why a sabbatical may be unlikely for ZuckerbergBut the odds of Zuckerberg actually following George's advice may be unlikely.
Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan are expecting their third child. "Happy to share that Max and August are getting a new baby sister next year!" Zuckerberg and Chan are college sweethearts and have been married since 2012. The Meta CEO announced Wednesday that he and his wife, Priscilla Chan, are expecting their third child, a girl. "Lots of love," Zuckerberg wrote in an Instagram post, accompanied by a selfie of Chan and him.
The popular course "Interpersonal Dynamics" was nicknamed "Touchy Feely" by professors and students. Stanford GSB shared with Business Insider that 95% of Stanford GSB students take this beloved course, even though it's not required. Courtesy of Ian CinnamonCinnamon added that now, whenever he's in any difficult situation, it's become "instinct" to think back to what he learned from the "Touchy Feely" course. "'Touchy Feely' has been influential in much of our work at Impact Experience," she said. "'Touchy Feely' and the courses in leadership that build from its approach … helped me develop the tools I now employ on a daily basis."
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been married to his wife, Priscilla Chan, since 2012. The couple met during college and have since had two kids together with a third on the way. They've also founded the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative and amassed a real estate empire. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg may not have gotten an undergrad degree out of Harvard, but he has his time at the university to thank for introducing him to his wife, Priscilla Chan. The couple met in 2003 at a frat party, and tied the knot in 2012, one day after the IPO of what was then called Facebook.
